K Series Quality Components

There are several companies that manufacture tubular skylights, but when it comes to quality and performance, no one compares to Kennedy Skylights.

High Impact Acrylic Dome

The Kennedy K Series dome is constructed of high-impact, UV stabilized acrylic with a low profile to blend seamlessly into the roof line. It is mounted in a stress absorbing seamless aluminum collar, which equalizes the pressure caused by expansion and contraction due to temperature fluctuations. Many of our competitors attach their dome directly to the flashing – doing so stresses the dome at the contact points and may cause the dome to crack and potentially leak.

Flashing

The flashing is extremely important, as it is responsible for keeping your roof from leaking. Our flashing is constructed of 1100 series, seamless pure grade aluminum, and its round shape minimizes damage to roofing shingles and enables it to withstand the stresses of expansion and contraction due to the temperature variations. Many of our competitors use lower grade galvanized materials with tack welded or rolled seams. Our unique forward sloping flashing design limits the use of light robbing elbows. Our flashings are available for pitched and flat roofs as well as for curb mount installations. Read more.

Highly-Reflective Light-Pipe

Our Miro-Silver® light pipe is one of the best performing in the industry with 98% reflectivity. A comprehensive test has shown that our light pipes outperform other light pipes particularly during early morning and late afternoon when useable light is needed the most. Most of the competition use lower grade, thinner gauge or less reflective light pipes. Our light pipe is assembled on-site with three securing methods ensuring a tight, dust free seal. Angle adapters with the same high reflective interior are also available. Read more.

Decorative Trim Ring and Diffuser

The trim ring and diffuser assembly are the only piece in the entire kit that the homeowner sees on a daily basis. Our trim ring is constructed of seamless aluminum and is powder coated white. It's easily removed for cleaning, yet provides a tight seal to minimize heat gain or loss. Constructed of durable acrylic, our standard diffuser is designed with a small arc that provides even light distribution without spotlight effects. We also offer flat and soft white diffuser options. Ceiling Trim Ring with Diffuser

The white powder coated seamless aluminum trim ring is used with all sheetrock ceiling installations. Our light diffusers are manufactured using durable acrylic that will not yellow overtime. The prismatic domed diffuser is standard and comes with the kit. It provides even light distribution without spotlight effects. Kennedy also offers the choice of a flat prismatic or soft white in either a flat or dome shape diffusers.

Prismatic refers to the pattern of prism-like shapes that disperse light into a spectrum and distribute the light evenly over a larger area eliminating spotlight effects. Our Soft White diffusers softens the incoming light and lessens harsh shadows.

Cross-Section of Light Pipe with Miro-Silver Advantage

The Light Pipe Miro-Silver® Advantage

The key component of the Kennedy Tubular Skylight is a super reflective, mirror-like light pipe with a 98% reflectivity rate. The entire length of the pipe's interior is coated with this reflective material called Miro-Silver®. Many other tubular skylights use a much thinner, less reflective material called Multi-layer Polymeric Film (MPF).

A series of tests were conducted comparing the Miro-Silver light pipe to the more standard Multi-layer Polymeric Film (MPF). The test's purpose was to measure the amount of light reflected at different times of the day - particularly when the sun's angle is low and light is really needed (early morning and late afternoon). Light reflection measurements were taken with the sun's angle at 13.8° and 40° on a 10 foot long x 12" diameter tube. The test results show that Kennedy's Miro-Silver light pipes transmit much more light between 13.8° and 40° than the standard Multi-layer Polymeric Film.

Sun's Angle Total Reflection Amount of Reflections Miro-Silver Advantage
13.8° 98.16% 40 +78%
40° 98.22% 11 +17%

How Bright Is the Light From A Tubular Skylight?

Kennedy Tubular Skylights illuminate the equivalent of up to 300 to 1,450 watts of incandescent lighting varying on the model installed (see chart), but without the heat gain of traditional lighting. Additionally, they filter out 99% of the harmful UV rays that fade furniture and carpeting. And because they operate using free solar power, Kennedy Tubular Skylights are energy efficient and will help reduce your electric bills! The standard kit length is 48". Extension tubes measuring 12" and 24" are available. The extension tubes have the same highly reflective mirror finish. Please note that the maximum amount of light decreases as the light pipe height increases.

K Series Tubular Skylight Energy Performance Ratings

U-Factor measures the rate of heat transfer and tells you how well the skylight insulates. U-factor values generally range from 0.20 to 1.25 and are measured in Btu/h ft2 °F. The lower the U-factor, the better the skylight insulates. The U-factor for K Series Kennedy Tubular Skylights is 0.54.

Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) measures the fraction of solar energy transmitted and tells you how well the product blocks heat caused by sunlight. SHGC is measured on a scale of 0 to 1; values typically range from 0.20 to 0.80. The lower the SHGC, the less solar heat the skylight transmits. The Solar Heat Gain for K Series Kennedy Tubular Skylights is 0.23.

Extremely Durable

Extreme Weather Tubular Skylights After a Storm

Engineered to Withstand All Weather Conditions

The rugged construction of our tubular skylights can easily withstand the harshest weather conditions including hurricanes and tornadoes. Both the dome and skylight flashing have been precision-engineered to combat all weather elements. The dome is made of thick, heavy-duty acrylic that can withstand the impact of flying debris in a storm.

Our flashing is manufactured without seams so that water cannot enter the skylight system. The forward sloping design of the flashing also helps water run off the unit. The flashing is secured to the roof using (8) heavy-gauged screws to hold it in place. The silicone seal around the flashing ensures that it’s water-tight.

Kennedy Skylights Survive Florida Tornado

Three tornadoes ripped through central Florida on February 2, 2007 killing at least 19 people and destroying hundreds of homes. The first tornado hit a retirement community, The Villages. It was a high-end EF-3 tornado with winds exceeding 160 mph. The tornado was no match for our skylights. Several Kennedy skylights had been installed in this community and all withstood the severe weather and sustained no damage!
